Kathleen Holmes

Kathleen brings to the Sunshine Coast an extensive background in classical ballet training. Her teachers have included ballerina Ekaterina Maximova and premier danseur Vladimir Vasiliev, former stars of Moscow's Bolshoi Ballet and the international ballet stars Anna-Marie and David Holmes, who trained at the legendary Vaganova Academy in St. Petersburg and danced as principal artists with the internationally acclaimed Kirov Ballet.

Kathleen has appeared professionally as a principal artist in many of the Russian classics including: Swan Lake, Paquita, Nutcracker, Sleeping Beauty, La Bayadere and in the title role of Prokofiev's Cinderella. She has performed for audiences in Italy, the United States, and Canada.  This classical background is ideally suited to her new position of ballet coach to the members of the Sunshine Coast Skating Club.  The standards today are directly related to the roots of Kathleen’s Russian training - for example the Russians’ Oleg and Ludmila Protopopov who took the World championship by storm in 1962 with their then startling use of classical ballet adage, and in 1976 John Curry won the European, World, and Olympic titles with performances heavily based upon classical ballet technique.  Ice skating was forever changed.  Kathleen, with her deep background in the Russian school, offers a unique opportunity to share with the members of the Sunshine Coast Skating Club the origins of the technique that vaulted so many of our contemporary skaters to stardom.

Program Assistants

In addition to the professional coaches in the CanSkate sessions, we have a number of program assistants who attend instruction courses to develop the skills necessary to assist the Professional Coaches to deliver a high quality program in a professional and safe environment. The Program Assistants are older, accomplished skaters at the club who volunteer their time to assist the younger skaters. They share their love and knowledge of skating while performing various duties. The Sunshine Coast Skating Cub appreciates the hard work of all our Program Assistants and considers them a great asset to our group sessions.
